An HR manager is a person who manages employee relations and issues; provides advice regarding compensation and benefits; manages recruitment activities; updates and monitors policies and procedures; manages various people-related projects (staff surveys, productivity improvements, etc.); and ensures compliance with state and federal employment laws and company policies and procedures. An HR manager’s job may also involve talent development, performance management, training, policy administration, compensation administration, investigation of complaints and conflict resolution, and disciplinary actions.
HR managers typically have Bachelor’s degrees in human resources, communications, business, or psychology. Five to 10 years of human resources experience is also generally required to become an HR manager. Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), Certified Benefits Professional (CBP), and/or Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) certifications are often considered preferred qualifications for HR manager jobs. As an HR manager, one must have strong interpersonal skills, strong communication skills (verbal and written), and proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (including MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, and Outlook).
