A human resources clerk assists in the operations of the human resources office through such activities as organizing, scanning, copying, and filing paperwork. A human resources clerk prepares new hire folders and benefit packets and completes reference checks and employment verifications. A human resources clerk coordinates, processes, and verifies personnel action forms affecting the temporary and civil service hiring process to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing. An HR clerk coordinates, processes, and reviews the accuracy of personnel action forms affecting salary changes, performance evaluations, terminations, leaves of absence, etc. to ensure timely and accurate processing. An HR clerk creates job postings to distribute to departments and post in newspapers and on websites, in addition to conducting maintenance on the applicant tracking system, scheduling interviews and exams, and assembling interview packets. A human resources clerk opens and distributes mail, enters hiring data into a computer, maintains job interest cards, creates personnel folders, labels communicator newsletter for mailing, and responds to employment verification requests from lending institutions.

A human resources clerk position requires a bachelor’s degree or two years of relevant work experience. An HR clerk should have good visual acuity for reviewing reports and using computers. A human resources clerk should also have the ability to communicate well with others both orally and in writing. A working knowledge of spreadsheets, database, and word processing applications is required.
