Department Summary

The Student Life Human Resources Department provides a full complement of talent lifecycle services to the 1200 staff and approximately 3000 plus student staff within the Division of Student Life. Functional areas include talent acquisition (recruitment), compensation practices, employee and labor relations, and performance management and employee development. The fifteen-(15) team members that make up the department work in various capacities including HR Generalists, Staffing and I-9 specialists and payroll representatives.

Job Summary

The Human Resources Director (HRD) will lead the strategic vision/direction of human resource operations and talent management for the division of Student Life. They will lead a department of up to 15 professional staff members. They are a critical leadership partner with directors across the division in the development and deployment of people and talent strategies. They lead the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategic staff plan in alignment with Student Life Human Resources, Division and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategic plans. Through close partnership with other division directors, they inform division objectives and priorities. The HR Director will report directly to the Associate Vice President, Student Life.

design and implementation of effective HR strategies, programs, practices, policies, and tools that are in alignment with, and in support of the achievement of the Student Life strategic objectives and priorities

Lead the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Staff Plan including creating annual actions plans and reports, oversight of sub teams, and represent Student Life as one of the Institutional Implementation Leads for the division. Develop an approach and practices with a commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Partner directly with division directors and senior leadership as a strategic business/human resource leader

Lead an effective people strategy designed to ensure the development and growth of skills and abilities to drive the division forward including succession planning, training, talent development, and performance management.

Develop and deploy an effective employee communication strategy providing updates on current topics and invites/encourages employee feedback on issues affecting the work environment and staff experience

Develop, recommend and implement policies, procedures and employee feedback tools designed to promote and monitor a positive employee relations climate and the accomplishment of strategic objectives.

Leadership: (40%)

Drive positive employee relations through coaching, consulting and facilitation skills to influence behavior and organizational decisions consistent with Student Life Vision and Mission.

Lead and model Student Life values of treating others with respect, dignity and in a manner where students and staff feel they belong, are listened to and learn from the perspective of others.

Coach and develop high performing HR team and supports them accomplishing HR initiatives and objectives focused on meeting human capital needs

Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation regarding labor relations, employee relations, diversity, employment, employee benefits, compensation, and other employee-related matters

Serve as an internal HR advisor on sensitive and confidential matters. Advice the leadership of student life and the unit Directors in all matters related to performance management, talent acquisition and development and labor relations

Management and Administrative: (10%)

Responsible for HR Budget and related items

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field

Minimum of eight (8) years of significant and progressive Human Resources related experience, including Labor Relations in a complex organization. Ability to apply human resources expertise to progressively move the organization forward while operating as part of a public institution.

Demonstrated experience in supervising and leading a team of professionals in the deployment of HR practices in a complex organization

Strong analytical skills

, including experience developing and using metrics for analysis; extensive computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and HR Management Systems.

Strong knowledge of HR emerging trends and best practices.

Demonstrated excellent client relationship in ensuring service delivery and developing positive relationships with other leaders and HR professionals at the University of Michigan. Build strong consultative relationships by serving as a strategic human resources business partner to leaders in fast-moving areas and those that have a reach across campus.

Demonstrated decision-making and problem solving skills.

Successful change management experience in leading HR initiatives that increase organizational effectiveness. Influence culture change through listening, inclusivity and curiosity.

Desired Qualifications*

Master’s Degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development or related field

Prior experience with HR Data Analytics; experience using scorecards and KPI’s

Implement development opportunities for management and leadership.

Previous demonstrated experience in diversity, equity and inclusion efforts to drive culture change

Previous experience working in a Higher Education environment

Working conditions

The HR Director working conditions include frequent travel across the UM Ann Arbor campus. The position requires the frequent use of a laptop computer and working in various workspaces (conference rooms. “Huddle room” offices, resident and dining halls, etc.)
