The Director of People is responsible for developing and executing human resource strategy in support of the overall strategic direction of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester (RMHCR), specifically in the areas of recruiting, on-boarding, performance management, compliance, employee relations, training/development, com-pensation and benefits, change management, and recognition/engagement strategies. Additionally, the position is also responsible for the robust and strategic RMHCR volunteer program and conducts all recruitment, interviewing, training, communication and recognition of volunteers for RMHCR family services at RMHCR locations. The Director of People recruits volunteers for the RMHCR Sale and other special events throughout the year. This position will support the Sale at peak times with on-site management of volunteers, in partnership with the Community En-gagement team. This position is a member of the leadership team. The Director of People reflects RMHCR’s mission and values not only in words but also in actions and integrates them into all human resource and volunteer activi-ties.


• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in human resources, organizational management, business administration, management or related field preferred

• 5-10 years of experience in human resources management; organizational management, project manage-ment required

• Successful in building relationships and skilled at leading through change

• Ability to work collaboratively with in both team leader and team member roles

• Excellent interpersonal and relational skills

• Strong written and verbal communications skills

• Ability to manage multiple and changing priorities in a dynamic environment

• High level of personal commitment and energy

• Effective balance between tactical operations and strategic thinking


• Manage day-to-day human resources needs and functions in accordance with policies, pertinent laws and regulations

• Serve as a leader in all change management efforts across the organization. Provide training and develop-ment opportunities for employees

• Manage compensation and benefits programs

• Oversee compliance needs and requirements for employees and volunteers—ensure a clear delineation between staff and volunteers through all formal and informal systems

• Actively recruit and interview volunteers for opportunities supporting RMHCR family services, programs, events, the Sale, and activities

• Collaborate with the Community Engagement team to ensure adequate volunteer support.

• Responsible for annual budget and plans of work for HR and volunteer program.

• Maintain the volunteer module of RMHCR’s database

• Ensure employee job descriptions and volunteer opportunity descriptions are current

• Conduct annual update to RMHCR Employee Handbook and Volunteer Manual

• Manage performance evaluation process to ensure equity and consistency

• Conduct staff and volunteer screenings, reference checks and background checks (when required)

• Manage employee recognition and engagement activities and efforts

• Responsible for all volunteer recognition, annual volunteer celebration and volunteer appreciation week
