Job Description:
Do you want to be actively involved in shaping a great place to work and positive environment which engages our people, allows them to flourish and fulfils our strategic ambitions? Are you passionate about helping our organisation address employee workplace issues fairly and consistently whilst demonstrating care?
As we transition to cleaner forms of energy, the challenge facing Shell and the wider energy industry in the coming decades is considerable. Our UK Employee and Industrial Relations (ER/IR) team plays an important role in building a great place to work for our people and enabling them to be their best, which supports Shell to be its best. As an ER/IR Advisor in the UK, you will manage employee relations cases with diligence, consistency and care. At Shell UK, our ER/IR team also supports our wider Employee Engagement and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) activities so there is plenty of opportunity for variety in this role.
Where you fit in
You'll be joining a highly engaged team that offers a supportive environment where you will laugh, learn and be challenged every day. This role reports into the UK Head of Employee and Industrial relations who, in turn, reports into the Vice President HR UK and Sectors and Decarbonisation. Other roles in the team include ER/IR Leads, ER/IR Advisors and DE&I Consultants.
What’s the role?
As an ER/IR advisor you will be providing support on matters related to collective and individual employee relations. Some examples include:
Employee Relations and Employee Engagement
Managing high-impact or high-risk individual or collective disciplinary, grievance or other employee relations issues
Managing local consultation processes and requirements
Developing and leveraging relationships with our UK Employee Engagement Forums
Driving and supporting our DE&I ambitions to ensure an inclusive workplace for Shell in the UK
Managing external risks and ensuring compliance with external legislative requirements
Identifying weak signals that provide early indication of organisational, cultural or behavioural issues and recommending appropriate interventions
Coaching members of the wider HR Advice team and Line Managers in effective employee and industrial relations
Using data and insights to proactively identify emerging ER/IR trends and define mitigations for potential future risks
HR Crisis Management, HSSE, Compliance & Ethics
Supporting local crisis management in collaboration with key stakeholders like the UK Country Chair, Real Estate, Health and Services
Becoming a member of the Family Liaison Team
Leading complex HR investigations, Global Helpline complaints and other grievances
Ensuring duty of care towards employees and contractors
What we need from you
You’ll ideally have:
Good subject matter expertise in UK Employee and Industrial Relations legislation, practices, and processes
Strong coaching and influencing skills to be able to effectively manage a broad range of external and internal stakeholders
Strong diagnostic and evaluation skills – with an ability to distil key themes and value drivers from complex and sometimes conflicting data and insights
An ability to identify and understand external market trends (economic, political, social) and derive insights to drive an effective long-term ER environment.
An ability to look at the big picture to suggest and drive change that proactively and positively supports the culture of the organisation
Experience building engaging communities
A strong sense of teamwork and partnership with others
Effective relationship and collaboration skills to manage stakeholders and work with other parts of the HR/business organisation as the ER/IR environment is shaped by an integrated collective effort
An appreciation of organisational health and design skills
An ability to take personal leadership in building a thriving ER/IR team and wider local HR team
Company Description
Shell started operations in the United Kingdom more than 110 years ago. Since then, we have grown into a leading innovative Oil & Energy company that rewards its employees by investing heavily in their careers and learning. Our people are our greatest asset, and our commitment to your career will see you thrive in a work environment that offers an industry-leading development programme. When your ideas travel, Shell will benefit, and innovation will thrive. Shell has a key role to play in helping meet the UK’s growing energy demand, whilst using innovative technologies to develop cleaner energy. An innovative place to work
There’s never been a more exciting time to work at Shell.
Join us and you’ll be adding your talent and imagination to a business with the ambition to shape the future – whether by investing in oil, gas and renewable energy to meet demand, exploring new ways to store energy, or developing technology that helps the world to use energy more efficiently, everyone at Shell does their part.
An inclusive place to work
To power progress, we need to attract and develop the brightest minds and make sure every voice is heard. Here are just some of the ways we are nurturing an inclusive environment – one where you can express your ideas, extend your skills, and reach your potential.
We’re creating a space where people with disabilities can excel through transparent recruitment process, workplace adjustments and ongoing support in their roles. Feel free to let us know about your circumstances when you apply, and we’ll take it from there.
We’re closing the gender gap – whether that’s through action on equal pay or by enabling more women to reach senior roles in engineering and technology.
We were a founding signatory of the BITC Race at Work Charter, which was launched in 2018 to help organisations take practical steps to tackle ethnic disparities in the workplace.
We’re striving to be a pioneer of an inclusive and diverse workplace, promoting equality for employees regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
We consider ourselves a flexible employer and want to support you finding the right balance. We encourage you to discuss this with us in your application.
A rewarding place to work
Combine our creative, collaborative environment and global operations with an impressive range of benefits and joining Shell becomes an inspired career choice.
We’re huge advocates for career development. We’ll encourage you to try new roles and experience new settings. By pushing people to reach their potential, we frequently help them find skills they never knew they had, or make career moves they never thought possible.
