The Learning and Development Manager manages the operations of an Underwriter Training team through the recruitment, selection, training, development, motivation, and salary administration of underwriter staff. In this role, you will oversee/coordinate team workflow; manage Department projects, customer service initiatives, and workflow design efforts; proactively work to ensure a customer-centered communication focus; serve as communication liaison/resource, providing technical problem resolution with agents, company management, and other companies regarding underwriting concerns; oversee the design, development and delivery of complex initial underwriter training materials, responsible for the mentor process, individual and ongoing classroom instruction, case audits and feedback to managers regarding performance; plan and coordinate the activities of the Underwriting Training team.
People Management
Oversees the design, development and delivery of complex initial underwriter training material.
Responsible for the development of underwriters through the oversight of the mentor process, individual and ongoing classroom instruction, case audits and feedback provided to managers regarding performance.
Responsible for negotiating and securing mentor resources to maintain the initial underwriter training program.
Responsible for the development, performance and overall success of underwriter trainees; participates in the underwriting hiring process.
Plans, directs, and coordinates the activities of the Underwriting Training team maintains departmental service standards and objectives with favorable mortality experience and persistency at the lowest possible net cost.
Keeps current on insurance and training industry, e-learning topics, and new training resources. Works with the division to set the training strategy for delivery of quality training.
Supervises and directs the work activities and risk analysis of underwriter trainees. Performs all aspects of performance management and career development of underwriters in the training program (approximately 12 months).
Establishes training program metrics and evaluation criteria to measure program and trainee success.
Responsible for the effective management of staff including focus on Diversity Inclusion
Operational/Project Management
Participates in, coordinates or leads major system and process improvement initiatives in the Department. Provides leadership to all aspects of these systems and process improvements including workflow, process changes and systems development initiatives. Acts as a liaison to other insurance operations departments when implementing initiatives.
Develops, implements, and monitors customer service standards for the Field Force. Initiates communication to address and resolve technical problems with field management.
Recommends and implements improved service strategies/standards to address work efficiencies. (i.e. divisional workflow
roles/responsibilities;
work area layout/workflow).
Coordinates, designs, and delivers field visitation programs and videoconferences to improve Home Office/Field relationships and to communicate Department practices and changes.
Partners with peer underwriting manager to administer the divisional budget.

Responds to complex/sensitive customer service complaints and questions in compliance with the National Association of Insurance Commission guidelines.

Bachelors' degree and/or an equivalent combination of education or progressively responsible work experience emphasizing decision-making, team building, communication, and personal development.
Minimum of seven years of operational experience which may include time as a people manager, Lead Underwriting Consultant, or experience in training and developing employees resulting in performance improvements.
Previous underwriting experience preferred.
Experience managing in a learning and training environment is strongly preferred.
Strong project management skills with the ability to lead or manage departmental projects or process improvement initiatives.
Strong interest in people development with demonstrated experience in staff selection, assignment, training, development, motivation and recognition.
Experience in supervision desirable, but not required.
Superior oral and written communication skills with the proven ability to build relationships and successfully negotiate issues with the field, policyowners, and employees required.
Very strong organization skills with the ability to independently set priorities and handle multiple diverse assignments within deadlines required.
