Feds to Speed Up Hiring Process

By EmploymentCrossing

Michael Hager, acting director of the Office of Personnel Management, or OPM, is directing federal agencies to shorten their hiring processes by October 2009, with the eventual goal of recruiting new employees within 80 days.

The goal of an 80-day hiring process covers all steps, from deciding to make a hire and posting the job announcement to interviewing candidates and finalizing a job offer.

Agencies can speed up the process by using job announcement templates and automated staffing systems to generate announcements and accept applications.

The OPM’s “End-To-End Hiring Initiative” also suggests steps for workforce planning, recruitment, the security clearance process, and bringing new employees on board.

The Office of Personnel Management is an independent agency that manages the civil service of the federal government.

President George W. Bush nominated Hager, a human resources federal executive, to lead the OPM in August. The Senate must still approve Hager’s nomination.
