Position Summary:
The Associate Vice President of Human Resources is responsible for the overall management and direction of the Office of Human Resources and serves under the administrative direction of the Vice President of Administration and Finance. This position provides administrative supervision and guidance in all human resources functions. In addition to providing vision and leadership, the incumbent is responsible for developing human resource policies, programs, and services that foster a high-performance culture and supports the recruitment, retention, and development of a superior employee base. As a member of the Administrative Affairs leadership team, the incumbent acts as a key campus advisor on human resources policies and procedures. Working collaboratively with campus leaders and managers, the incumbent is expected to successfully build, develop, and maintain a workforce that strives to fulfill the University's purpose and goals.
Key Responsibilities:
Provides overall management and direction of the six functional areas of Human Resources:
Employee and labor relations
Classification and compensation
Employee records and electronic data administration
Professional learning and development
Recruitment and hiring
Employee benefits
Guides and assists with the human resources needs and organizational development throughout the University.
Advises and serves as a strategic partner to University executives regarding Human Resources issues that affect general institutional planning and administration.
Partner with the Office of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion to further DEI initiatives of University.
Qualifications
The Associate Vice President of HR will have significant HR knowledge and expertise. Specific skills, knowledge, abilities, and attributes include:
Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities, with transparency in decision-making and management.
Proven commitment to quality and integrity.
Advanced understanding of federal and state labor and employment laws, rules and regulations, such as the Fair Labor Standards Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Title IX, EEO, Workers’ Compensation, COBRA, and the Family Medical Leave Act, among others.
Demonstrated efficacy in advancing diversity and organizational change initiatives.
Advanced knowledge of and commitment to affirmative action and equal employment opportunity.
Competent in leading information technology initiatives that transform HR processes and improve customer experiences.

Demonstrated knowledge of Human Resources Information Systems.

Required Education and Professional Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in business, management, human resources, or related area.
Minimum of six years of strong generalist human resources experience across multiple HR disciplines with increasing levels of responsibility.
At least five years of experience in managing at team of human resources professionals.
Preferred Qualifications:
M.B.A or relevant advance degree.
Ten years of strong human resources generalist experience across a full range of HR functional areas with increasing levels of responsibility within a higher education environment.
Specialized professional human resources certification (SHRM-SCP or SPHR).
Demonstrated experience with implementation of HR information systems and data management.
Experience in a collective bargaining environment, preferably in higher education.
Experience handling grievances and appeals to the California State Personnel Board.
Knowledge of the California State University system.
Experience with PeopleSoft HRIS systems.
