Job Description:
Reports to the Associate Vice President of Finance. The Director of Payroll is responsible for providing and designing short- and long-term strategic payroll leadership for approximately 3,000 employees. This position will foster relationships with senior internal stakeholders by establishing and maintaining exceptional business relationships and working collaboratively. The Director will be responsible for the coaching, mentoring, and leadership of the payroll staff that provide day-to-day payroll support.
Provide leadership and direction in the utilization, accuracy, and effectiveness of Payroll Operations
Develop and manage effective service level goals
Ensure collaborative working relationships with Human Resources and Finance
Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures
Coach, mentor and provide leadership development to team members to optimize operational excellence
Oversee the cross training of payroll staff and maintain an active teamwork environment
Manage payroll vendor relationships, including research, selection, partnership, and management
Oversee the process of contractually mandated salary increases
Partner with internal and external compliance resources to provide audit and oversight of the team's activities and processes
Oversee the year-end processes
Schedule, audit, and review procedures to ensure the accuracy, and integrity of payroll data
Oversee systems related to testing and maintenance compliance
Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of Federal, State and City guidelines related to payroll
Maintain knowledge of all payroll processing and modifications
Maintain knowledge of legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting payroll such as tax filings
Build partnerships and solicit feedback from internal and external business partners to define and develop successful, accessible processes and practices.
Provide leadership for problem resolution to facilitate improvements and improved working relationships
Recommend, develop, and implement payroll principles that enhance effectiveness through the organization
Assist clients in obtaining information for payroll; respond to, research, resolve client questions and problems
Assist in projects as assigned by the Associate VP of Finance
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors degree required
10 Years and more in the HR/Payroll field required
Supervisory experience in a HR/Payroll field required
Strong Payroll/HR administration experience
Excellent computer skills (i.e. Microsoft/Word, Excel/vlookup, pivot tables)
Experience with HRIS/Payroll systems
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
Strong customer service skills
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Knowledge of payroll policies and procedures
Exercise a high level of professional discretion and confidentiality
Preferred Qualifications
Masters preferred.
Experience with Banner system preferred.
Payroll/Finance/HR Experience in Higher Education field preferred
